Sea Shepherd

Recently, Quantum Tattoo Ink partner Sea Shepherd and their Ship the Bob Barker were featured in Rewriting Extinction's The Most Important Comic Book on Earth, Stories to Save the World. In “The Shepherd and the Thunder,” Sea Shepherd Captain Peter Hammarstedt tells the Story of Operation Icefish in which they took down the infamous poaching ship The Thunder. This story, written by Brian Azcarello with art by Danijel Zezelj and lettering by Bernardo Brice is Part of a collaborative effort that brought together over "300 leading environmentalists, artists, authors, actors, filmmakers, musicians and more to present over 120 Stories to save the world."

How did Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Start?

Captain Paul Watson, a founding member of Greenpeace, started the Earthforce Environmental Society in 1977 in Vancouver, Canada. Along with Starlet Rum, Ron Precious, and Captain Al "Jet', Johnson, he worked on various conservation efforts, including those to stop poaching. In 1928 with financial backing from the Fund for Animals and the RSPCA, he was able to purchase the ship that would become the sea shepherd.

In 2013, Sea Shepherd Global was established in Amsterdam as a base for global communications and logistics for independent entities of the movement in over 20 countries. The Sea Shepherd fleet now consists of several ships, the most well-known include the Ocean Warrior, the San Simeon, and the Bob Barker in their global fleet.

What is the Sea Shepherd mission?

The Sea Shepherd mission is to "protect defenseless marine wildlife and end the destruction of habitat in the world's oceans." This mission is broken into three core areas:

  1. Defend Ocean Wildlife- The main threats that they combat in this area are poaching, unsustainable fishing, habitat destruction, and exploitive captivity. Through their efforts, they have saved countless turtles, fish, dolphins seals, whales, sharks, and aquatic birds.
  2. Protect Marine Habitat- Protecting mane habitats doesn't just keep marine life alive, it allows species to thrive. By taking a stand against pollution, destructive fishing gear, offshore drilling and fisheries, plastic and other trash that ends up in the ocean, and the destruction of coral reefs, they work towards securing a future for precious sea life.
  3. Uphold International Laws and Agreements - Sea Shepherd works with Interpol and international governments worldwide to uphold international conservation laws and bring to justice those who don’t.

What does ocean conservation have to do with tattoos?

When sailors come to mind, likely so do tattoos. There is a long tradition and history of tattoo culture among sailors, so it should come as no surprise that Sea Shepherd has their very own tattoo studio, Sea Shepherd Tattoo in Amsterdam created to help raise money for their conservation efforts. Artists at Sea Shepherd Tattoo donate their time and 100% of the cost of getting tattooed there goes towards their campaigns. What products does Sea Shepherd use in their studio?

Sea Shepherd and Quantum Tattoo Ink have collaborated on a vegan, cruelty-free line of tattoo products that are made with organic, natural pigments sourced from the earth. None of the pigments ever come from animals. The great news is that you don’t have to go all the way to Amsterdam to support Sea Shepherd! Wherever you tattoo, you can use these earth-conscious tattoo inks. They can be purchased individually and also come in three curated sets. The Sea Shepherd Gray Wash Set includes two black inks and four gray washes in varying shades. The Sea Shepherd Whale Set includes six different colors in blues, greens, and grays. The Sea Shepherd Shark Set includes four grays and two reds to represent the unnecessary bloodshed of sharks worldwide.

A portion of all proceeds from Sea Shepherd inks goes toward their conservation efforts around the globe.
